{"id":799,"date":"2011-05-26T19:30:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-26T19:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abandonedcouches.com\/?p=799"},"modified":"2026-06-26T19:32:43","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T19:32:43","slug":"neko-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abandonedcouches.com\/?p=799","title":{"rendered":"Neko Case"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>May 2011, 40 Watt, Athens, Ga.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe made me watch <em>America\u2019s Next Top Model<\/em>,\u201d Neko Case said with a certain snarl, pointing to bandmate Kelly Hogan early the show at the 40 Watt Club. \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever seen anything that made me so angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was funny moment, but also a bit tense, and proved a feeling that lasted during most of Neko\u2019s hour and a half set, as the American singer\/songwriter struggled on and off with the soundman but still produced a stellar night of songs from her extensive catalog. Pulling a half-dozen songs from 2009\u2019s <em>Middle Cyclone<\/em>, Neko added a handful of tunes from 2006\u2019s <em>Fox Confessor Brings the Flood<\/em>, as well as gems from \u201cBlacklisted\u201d and \u201cCanadian Amp\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She opened the night with the haunting \u201cThings That Scare Me\u201d (off of <em>Blacklisted<\/em>), setting the stage for some inspired song choices (but not \u201cSouth Tacoma Way,\u201d which was requested again and again by a drunken girl near the stage, drawing the ire of the crowd and Neko herself, who added \u201cWe\u2019re going to play what we want to play, OK?\u201d). She followed up with \u201cMaybe Sparrow,\u201d a song which showcases what Neko does best \u2014 sing the hell out of songs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFever,\u201d \u201cPeople Got A Lotta Nerve\u201d and \u201cThe Pharaohs\u201d followed (a song she said was about an imaginary boyfriend she had who was from Athens, a place everyone knows has the best imaginary boyfriends). \u201cMargaret vs. Pauline\u201d proved a great moment, as the song is just so good, hearing it live gives it an added jump. Neko traded guitars through the night, armed with four-string, six-string and yes even a seven-string guitar. Her beloved Fender Jazzmaster let her down, prompting her to sadly note \u201cI think the Jazzmaster has died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other highlights of the main set were \u201cFox Confessor Brings The Flood,\u201d \u201cThat Teenage Feeling\u201d and \u201cThis Tornado Loves You\u201d. The four-song encore included \u201cVengeance Is Sleeping,\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t Forget Me\u201d and ended with \u201cKnock Loud,\u201d from the 2001 EP <em>Canadian Amp<\/em>. After some struggles earlier in the show, the encore was strong and light, as if the band finally found its groove just as it was about to leave.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, a good show at a packed Watt, which made for a nice atmosphere (sorry, no pictures, not that it stopped everyone from wanting to take a shot, or for the woman in front of me, 100). Near the end of the night, as she continued to rage against <em>ANTM<\/em>, Neko railed against Tyra Banks. \u201cSmile with your eyes? How the hell do you do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Who knows?
