But the genre\u2019s ubiquitous nature is giving rise to mediocrity \u2013 good Americana (like a man in many a song) is hard to find.<\/p>\n
Through five years and three albums, Star Anna used her powerful voice to roam the better part of alt-country, gaining a steady fan base while touring the country with her band the Laughing Dogs. But on her latest album Go To Hell, Anna ditched the band and picked an edgy, painful brood for 10 varied tracks to stellar results.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s the subtle and melodic piano musings in \u201cGo To Hell\u201d and the stunning \u201cEverything You Know,\u201d both punctuated by Anna\u2019s command of howling and whispering from one stanza to the next. \u201cPower of My Love\u201d showcases a certain pop sensibility, accompanied by playful guitars, while \u201cLet Me Be\u201d is a rocker right in Melissa Etheridge territory. Following a rollicking cover of Tom Waits \u201cCome On Up to The House,\u201d Anna ends Hell with \u201cSmoke Signals,\u201d a fast-paced piece of punk tearing a page from Nirvana\u2019s \u201cTerritorial Pissings.\u201d I\u2019ll say this for Anna \u2013 her influences couldn\u2019t be better.<\/p>\n
