It is rare when a band is able to leave its local scene and become a force nationally or internationally (don’t believe me, try looking at MySpace and count how many bands you see), and too often that inability to make the next step ends a band before it gets going.

But there are those who embrace where they’re from, and being satisfied with that gives them credence beyond its borders. Sometimes being famous is not as important as making good music at your own pace and letting things fall where they may — and feeling that way can sometimes make you famous, if only a little.

For 16 years, Elf Power has been a band which creates with purpose, pumping out strong albums while building a solid fan base and becoming an Athens institution. An original member of the Elephant 6 Collective, Elf Power has the trust and backing of an important musical family and will always be a force. Saturday night at the 40 Watt, Elf Power hosted a party for its newest release, a self-titled album and the 12th one in its catalog.

The quintet of Andrew Rieger, Jimmy Hughes, Derek Almstead, Eric Harris and Laura Carter showcased new songs during its hour and 20 minute set, throwing in a nice sampling of songs from its various albums (including the title track from its first release Vainly Clutching at Phantom Limbs). While not a band with a frantic live show, the five imbue a workmanlike feel to each song, playing each with care and clarity (which the dancing band much approved of). The night featured such songs as The Taking Under, Spiral Stairs, When The Red King Comes, Everlasting Scream, Drug Store and Owl Cut (White Flowers in the Sky). A cover of Royal Trux’s Junkie Nurse was thrown in, while the encore included Jane and Temporary Arm, much to the delight of the bounding crowd.

It’s my fourth time seeing Elf Power, and they were good as always. Each time I see the band (which has always been in Athens) I get the sense there’s a comfort it feels in front of its home crowd, with friends and family sprinkled about. It was sure a welcome sight to see Elf Power once again.

October 2010, 40 Watt, Athens, GA There are bands which persist and survive merely by continuing to work and produce at a high, constant level.
