I Amstel like beer \u2014 it has a weightiness, giving it confidence and breadth. But I found I can only drink it on certain occasions \u2014 it’s not an every time beer.<\/p>\n
Perhaps that\u2019s why they make Amstel Light. With half the heaviness, it\u2019s a solid carefree beer \u2014 one good for all occasions \u2014 but it\u2019s not crap like Bud Light.<\/p>\n
This, of course, leads me to Beck.<\/p>\n
On the heels of The Information, Beck\u2019s sprawling almost-hourlong album from 2006, comes Modern Guilt, a 34-minute breeze of pop minimalism meets \u201960s psychedelia. Brewed by Danger Mouse, a former UGA student turned DJ\/producer extraordinaire, Modern Guilt is focused and blunt (missing are Beck\u2019s many overdubs and electronic languishes) with fun bouncy beats as light as Chinese gymnasts.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s not to say there\u2019s no weight to it, forged through Beck\u2019s doom and gloom lyrics dripping from his marble mouth. \u201cChemtrails\u201d is a dreamy Beatles groove circa Revolver about the waste jets leave in their wake. \u201cWatching the sea\/Full of people\/Try not to drown,\u201d Beck laments. Yikes. In \u201cGamma Ray,\u201d a happy surf beat homage if there ever was one, Beck sings about the end of the world: \u201cTrying to hold\/Hold out for now\/With these ice caps\/Melting down.\u201d And \u201cVolcano\u201c has him ruminating about leaping into lava. Fun times. The highlight: \u201cProfanity Prayers,\u201d a bubblegum burst that has Beck \u201cwaiting for the light.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a mature Beck and a playful Danger Mouse going to different parties but emerging together with something refreshing and dour.<\/p>\n
